Both competent indoor lead climbers, they were keen to experience and learn the necessary skills to climb outdoors. We started off the day at Burbage North in what looked like promising conditions, but then torrential downpours swept across the Burbage valley and despite a determined hour or so of climbing in the rain, we finally decided to head back to the car and try the slightly more sheltered venue of Yarncliffe. Fortunately this decision proved to be a correct one and by the time we had arrived at Yarncliffe the rain had stopped. Even though the rock was still wet, the quarry was empty allowing us to continue going through the skills of placing protection and building belays before both Michael and James led a route each with a slack top rope. Burbage North may seem like an unlikely setting for undertaking scrambling, yet the broken, rocky ground to the right Of Ash Tree Wall provides an ideal area for looking at the necessary skills for ropework and belaying on scrambles, albeit on a smaller scale. There was a distinct sense of Autumn today not only signalled by the changing colours of the vegetation in the valley, but also by the chilly wind blowing over the crag. The picture below is of some Cladonia floerkeana, (sometimes referred to as Devil's Matchsticks) which was in the rocks around Ash Tree Wall.

Thornbridge Outdoors

I have again been working for Sheffield City Council at their outdoor education centre, Thornbridge Outdoors delivering outdoor based educational activities for groups of school children.
